Romantic itinerary in Tuscany: 3 perfect days for two

Romantic itinerary in Tuscany: 3 perfect days for two

Tuscany is romantic for reasons that go beyond the landscape. It is romantic because it slows you down. Because the wine is good, the food is warm, the villages are silent at sunset. Because there are places where you stop and look around, and the landscape you see seems made just for that moment.

This three-day itinerary is designed for a couple who want authentic Tuscany - not the postcard version, but the one you truly remember.

Tuscany is romantic because it slows you down. Because the wine is good, the food is warm, the villages are silent at sunset. Because there are places where you stop and look around, and the landscape seems made just for that moment.

Tuscany is romantic for a precise reason

Tuscany was designed - in the literal sense - to be beautiful. The peasants and medieval lords who shaped these hills over the centuries made aesthetic choices: the cypresses in rows, the vineyards at mid-hill, the villages on the highest point. These were practical choices too, of course, but they had a deliberate aesthetics.

The result, for two people here together, is a setting where beauty is everywhere - in the glass of Chianti, in the sunset light on Pienza, in the steam rising from the Bagno Vignoni pools in the morning.

Day 1: arrival in Poggibonsi, dinner at Ristorante Alcide

The first day is the arrival and settling-in day.

Arriving in the late afternoon allows you to get comfortable at the hotel, take a walk around the centre of Poggibonsi, and discover the town’s character without rushing.

In the evening, dinner is at Ristorante Alcide, within Hotel Alcide. The restaurant is one of the references for Tuscan cuisine in the Val d’Elsa: local cuisine with territorial products, a wine list featuring Chianti Classico from the area, a service that lacks the coldness of international chain hotels.

The first evening in Tuscany, at the table, with a good glass in front of you, is the right way to begin.

Day 2: Val d’Orcia and sunset at Pienza

The second day is the Val d’Orcia day - the territory with the most intensely romantic landscape in Tuscany.

Morning: depart for Bagno Vignoni (1 hour by car). The morning thermal baths, the Gorello pools, with steam rising in the still-cool air, have an atmosphere that the afternoon baths do not. You immerse in the warm water with the countryside around you, and almost no one else.

Lunch: San Quirico d’Orcia (7 km from Bagno Vignoni). A quiet trattoria, perhaps off the main tourist circuit - the kind you find by looking around a little.

Afternoon: Pienza (12 km from San Quirico). The Renaissance square of Pope Pius II, the Duomo, the Pecorino shops. Buy a cheese board to take back to the hotel or eat sitting on a bench with a view over the countryside.

Sunset: the sunset seen from the loggia of Palazzo Piccolomini or from the bastions of Pienza, with the Val d’Orcia stretching southwards, is one of the most beautiful moments Tuscany can offer a couple.

Evening: dinner in Pienza or return to Poggibonsi.

Day 3: Chianti, winery and thermal bath at Bagno Vignoni

The third day combines Chianti in the morning with a final thermal immersion in the afternoon.

Morning: Chianti (15-20 minutes from Poggibonsi). Choose a winery where you have booked in advance for a tasting for two - something more personal than a group tasting. Many wineries in the Castellina or Radda area offer bespoke experiences for couples.

Lunch: at the winery itself if available, or at a nearby agriturismo. A Tuscan lunch with the wine of the winery you have just visited is one of the most complete gastronomic experiences.

Afternoon: return towards Poggibonsi and, if energy allows, a stop in San Gimignano for a Dondoli gelato - or simply a walk before heading back.

Where to stay: Hotel Alcide as a base

Hotel Alcide in Poggibonsi is the base for this itinerary. It is not an isolated farmhouse in the middle of Chianti vineyards - which exists and is beautiful - but it is a hotel with history, care and a position that allows easy movement to all the destinations of the itinerary.

The included breakfast allows you to start each day early and refreshed. The central position in Poggibonsi eliminates long transfers.

Budget and tips for not breaking the magic

A common mistake of the romantic Tuscany trip is over-planning: too many stops, too much rushing, more desire to “do” than to “be”.

The advice is to leave at least one hour per day unplanned - to stop in an unexpected square, to enter a wine shop without a reservation, to wait for a sunset that was not in the diary.

The budget for three days (double room, meals, admissions, tasting) is approximately €400-700 per couple, excluding travel.
