Chianti wine tasting: how to organise it and what to expect

A wine tasting in Chianti is not just a sip. It is a way to understand a territory, to meet the people who produce it, and to understand why the Sangiovese grown on these specific hills gives results so different from those grown elsewhere.

This guide is practical: it is not a list of wineries to visit or avoid, but a manual on how to approach the experience with the right expectations.

A wine tasting in Chianti is not just a sip. It is a way to understand a territory, to meet the people who produce it, and to understand why that Sangiovese on those specific hills tastes of something you cannot find anywhere else.

A winery tasting: what really happens

A tasting in a Chianti winery usually works like this: you arrive by appointment (you can rarely walk in without a booking at quality wineries), you are welcomed by a representative of the winery - the owner, a winemaker or a sales person - and you do two things: visit the winery and taste the wines.

The winery visit usually includes the barrique room (where barrels rest) and often the vineyard. Some wineries offer tastings only at the counter, without a production tour.

The wines served range from the Chianti Classico annata to the most prestigious products. It is often possible to buy bottles directly at the winery.

Duration varies from one hour (standard tastings) to half a day (complete tours with gastronomic pairings).

How to book a winery visit in Chianti

Most wineries in the Chianti Classico require a reservation. Some options:

  • Winery website: the most direct approach. Structured wineries have dedicated booking pages with a calendar and prices
  • Chianti Classico Consortium: the official website (chianticlassico.com) has a winery section with information on visits
  • Local wine tourism agencies: some agencies in Greve in Chianti or Radda organise guided tours including bookings
  • Email or phone: for smaller wineries, direct contact is often the most effective approach

The recommended lead time is 3-5 days. In high season (May-October, especially weekends) it is better to book 1-2 weeks in advance.

What you taste: Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione

The Chianti Classico DOCG has three levels:

Chianti Classico Annata: the base wine, with at least 12 months of ageing. It is the most accessible Chianti Classico, both in price and style. Drink young or with a few years of ageing.

Chianti Classico Riserva: must age at least 24 months, including 3 in bottle. More complex structure, greater longevity. Often represents the main character of the winery.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: introduced in 2014, it is the highest category. Minimum 30 months of ageing, from a single vineyard or specific selection. Each winery interprets this level in a very personal way.

In a standard tasting you usually try 3-4 wines, often one from each category.

The cost of a tasting in Chianti

Prices vary considerably:

  • Basic tasting (2-3 wines at the counter, no visit): from €10 to €20 per person
  • Tasting with winery visit (3-5 wines + tour): from €25 to €50 per person
  • Tasting with gastronomic pairings (wines + cheese, charcuterie, bread): from €40 to €80 per person
  • Premium tours (Gran Selezione + dinner or lunch): from €80 to €150 per person

In many wineries, the tasting fee is deducted from the cost of any bottles purchased.

The most accessible wineries near Poggibonsi

From Poggibonsi you can quickly reach wineries in the Castellina in Chianti area (15 km) and along the SS222 towards Greve (25-30 km). Some representative options:

The Castellina in Chianti area has wineries of various sizes - some family-run, some more structured for wine tourism. It is the closest entry point to the Chianti Classico zone from the Val d’Elsa.

Panzano in Chianti, also famous for the Macelleria Cecchini, has wineries combining tasting with vineyard visits in a remarkable landscape setting.

Cantine Aperte: Chianti Classico events

Twice a year, the Chianti Classico Consortium organises special events:

Chianti Classico Collection (February, Florence): the presentation of new vintages, open to trade operators but also to the public in some sessions.

Cantine Aperte: spring and autumn events in which wineries in the zone open without a reservation, with tastings, guided tours and often concerts or other events. These are very popular days, but also very informal.

Getting home after the tasting: the transport question

The practical problem of a winery tasting is the journey back. After three or four glasses of Chianti, driving is neither prudent nor legal.

Options:

  • Organise the tour with an agency that provides transport
  • Go in two, alternating who drives and who tastes
  • Use local taxi or private driver services (often available on request)
  • Stay nearby - Hotel Alcide in Poggibonsi is 15-20 minutes from the first Chianti wineries, and booking a taxi back is straightforward
